spring break essentials

Swimsuit (it's reversable!) | Clutch | Aviators | Hat | Book | Tinted Moisturizer

Ahh Spring Break! The first taste of summer and freedom if you're in school or a clear reminder you need a two week vacation ASAP if you're a full time employee. Here in Puerto Rico we celebrate holy Thursday and Good Friday, which means we have a 4 day weekend. So I decided this could be a great time to enjoy some much needed self care and enjoy yourself under the sun with these Spring Break Essentials:

A One Piece Swimsuit

I've been going crazy looking for the perfect one piece swimsuit until I finally found the right one (similar to this one) at Old San Juan's Marshalls. I just love how one piece swimsuits make you feel sexy but sophisticated. Plus they keep your boobs right in place!

Here are some fun suggestions:

The Right Skincare and Makeup

I know what you're thinking. Why would you wear makeup when your out in the water or sweating? Because SPF Tinted Moisturizers exists my dear! Plus, you better take care of those lips while enjoying the sun or you won't be kissing anybody soon.

Make sure you bring some strong sunscreen like this one by Coola, a good tinted moisturizer like this one by Nars I've been enjoying so far and some moisturizer (I enjoy facial oils like this one).

Click away, thank me later!

An Embroidery Floppy Hat

If you are not familiar with this huge fad on Instagram, you are probably not following enough fashion bloggers. All I know is once I saw that super expensive "Do Not Disturb" hat I knew I wanted it ASAP. How cool will you look poolside with a mojito in your hand?!

Here are some budget options:

Beach Bags

If you're like me, you hate carrying purses to the beach or pool side! But where else will you carry all your sunscreen and lip balm?! With tropical clutches like this one of course!

Here are some more budget friendly options:

Black Sunglasses

I've been obsessed with these very Kardashian-esk black on black Aviator Ray-Bans lately because they make any outfit look instantly bad ass. I love Ray-Ban as a brand because they are such great quality compared to other luxury sunglasses, but if you're looking for a more budget friendly, these Quay x Desi Perkins could be a great option. I must say I am kind of tempted.

Here are some options for you:

Reading Material

Don't forget to bring your favorite magazine and a good beach book. I would suggest going for fiction instead of business or self help books just to keep our mission of being relaxed. But if that's your jam, OK!

Here are some of my suggestions:

Local Shopping in Old San Juan

Shopping, Travel, LifestyleMaría Elena RodríguezComment

Honestly, I visited Old San Juan this past Saturday with the intention of just eating brunch at Caficultura, one of the best places to drink coffee in the city. But then, as it always happens, I felt inspired to walk through the pavers of this old colonial city and visit all the local shops I love so much that I can only find in Old San Juan.

Needless to say, if you've ever felt a lack of inspiration in your life, there's no better way to cure it than visiting Old San Juan. This city has je ne sais quoi that can only be described as magic. It is not just the beautiful architecture and spectacular views of the San Juan Bay... it's more about the people and their energy.

Each local shop you visit in Old San Juan makes you feel like you are visiting an old friend and you feel opened to strike conversations with them. And I don't know about you, but this doesn't happen to me at any shopping mall.

Don't get me wrong, we all know local shopping, specially in this Island where our sales tax is up to 11.5% is not easy, but I believe local shopping is the best way to have a simpler lifestyle. Since it is, in some cases, slightly more expensive but much higher quality, you'll be buying less of what you don't need and more of what you do need. See? It is not that hard.

But let's get to the point. :) Here's the end result of my most recent local shopping experience:

Collective Request

I've been following this online store almost since they first opened. Their Instagram account is to die for and I always wanted to buy something from their store. So when I saw their new store in Calle Luna #201 it was a pleasant surprise to see super affordable quality clothing. And don't even get me started on their dainty gold jewelry! They are definitely on my wish list.

I ended up buying this oversized Canadian Tuxedo in just $16!

LUCA

If you love minimal design you will fall in love with this store. This tiny store has a modern and chic vibe that brings joy to your life. If you're like me, you will be wandering around for a while just discovering from the simplest gold brass jewelry to the most beautiful article of clothing.

Since I was looking for some nice hoop earrings, I decided to go for these chic and unique ones, to give a little twist to my standard look. Then I saw this beautiful pen and it just spoke to my soul.

Pure Soul

These are two stores in Old San Juan that are the epitome of lifestyle for me. One of them focuses on boho chic clothing and accessories and the other one on decoration and living. Every time I visit one of these stores I end up with one of two things: with a slimmer wallet or super inspired!

Between all of the beautiful things I saw, I found this adult coloring book and journal (as if I don't have enough of them already). Just like their names, these items feel like they are for the soul. I have to admit the size of this coloring book was key to my purchase because I can just throw it in my handbag and pretend I have the free time in my day to use it! Ha! Then I saw this notebook that says "always be inspired" and I just knew I needed it to write down every blog idea that comes to my mind.

As you may have seen from this post, in Old San Juan every store has a story. Just do a quick Google search and you'll start seeing its magic. ;)

What are your favorite local shops?

Elena
