I'm all up for anything that has to do with beautifying yourself the most natural way possible. So when I started to see all the buzz around dry brushing, I went ahead and bought one. But before I get into any details from my experience, here are the basics you should know about this procedure:
- What exactly is dry brushing?
According to Mind Body Green, "one third of your body’s toxins are excreted through the skin and dry brushing helps to unclog pores and excrete toxins that become trapped in the skin". Sounds kind of disgusting... But... this means that dry brushing is basically an exfoliating procedure that cleans your skin from the inside out by stimulating your lymphatic system. If you are not exactly sure about what your lymphatic system is, here is a simple explanation.
- Why is it good for you?
Believe it or not, some people use this method for stress relieve. And after using it for almost three weeks, I'll have to agree. It is also said to improve your digestion and kidney function and help your skin absorb more nutrients.
But if you ask me, the best part about dry brushing is that it reduces cellulite and the appearance of varicose veins!
Mind Body Green states that it reduces cellulite by helping "to break down any trapped toxins from within the body and help your body eliminate them through its usual elimination channels". Again... gross! And since this procedure helps improve circulation, varicose veins may become less noticeable.
- Is there a right way to dry brush your skin?
First of all you need a brush with natural bristles. You will be brushing this through your body and even though it is meant to be invigorating, you don't want to scratch your skin off.
Second, you're supposed to do this technique in direction to your heart. You can do a simple Pinterest search and you will find all the diagrams you need to understand how to dry brush. I found this one to be the most helpful.
- For how long should you dry brush?
You can do it for as long as you want, at least once daily. The procedure should be simple and not painful, leaving you with a pink hue in your skin. If it turns red, you're definitely doing it wrong and should stop immediately. Again, make sure you are using a brush with natural bristles to avoid injuries.
- What has been your experience?
Well first of all, I was a little turned off by the fact that I purchased my dry brush at Bed Bath and Beyond for around $18 just because it had "natural bristles", which I found a little insane for something so basic. Here is the same one for $16 on Amazon. But right when I started dry brushing I knew it was worth it just for the invigorating and as I said before, relaxing sensation. Even though I still haven't seen any major improvements in my skin, I have high hopes this will slowly remove my varicose veins which have been a struggle of mine for a while now.
